Foi para a Gâmbia, em 1996, onde trabalhou por cinco anos como músico entretenimento no Hotel Kairaba. Ele iniciou sua carreira musical tocando no grupo Rara- Gi Band of Pape Modou Diagne, então ele formou seu próprio grupo chamado The Balansa Vibrations. Em Gâmbia, Kairaba Hotel ele dividiu o palco com artistas como Youssou N'dour, Lucky Dube, Baba Maal, e Omar Pene. Becausse da popularidade de sua canção "Balansa", Ussumane ficou conhecido como "Balansa".
